 2008 LEGISLATION SESSION

· LEGISLATIVE ANNOUNCEMENT
NSPS has been working for the past two years to have the federal government establish a National Surveyors Week. House Concurrent Resolution 223 supporting this effort is currently being sponsored by Representative Chris Van Hollen (MD-8). Fifty co-sponsors are required to bring this resolution to the floor for a vote, where we are certain it will pass. As of 6-23-08 there are 30 co-sponsors, including Rep. John Larson of Connecticut. CALS Legislative Chairmen Bob Dahn has asked that all CALS members contact their representatives via email, phone or mail and urge that they consider co-sponsoring this Resolution. A sample letter would be as follows:

June 24, 2008

Honorable Congressman Your Rep
8 Your Reps Street
Your District, CT 06***

Dear Representative Your Rep,

I am writing as a voter in your district and as a member of the Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors (CALS), the professional society of the land surveying community in Connecticut.

The purpose of this letter is in regards to HCR 223 of the 110th Congress 1st session, which has been sponsored by Rep. Chris Van Hollen (MD-8). Resolution 223 recognizes the importance of the surveying profession in the history of the United States.

With 50 co-sponsors this resolution will be brought to the floor for a vote. I am asking that you please consider co-sponsoring this resolution along with Representative Larson. Your co-sponsorship of this resolution will mean a great deal to all of us who earn a living in land surveying.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Bills are monitored for CALS by Updike, Kelly & Spellacy.  Click on the bill number for information about the bill from the State of Connecticut website. If you have any questions about any particular bills contact Bob Dahn at bdahn@meehangoodin.com.

Bills can be accessed at www.cga.ct.gov.

Kevin Reynolds of Updike, Kelly and Spellacy has informed CALS that Raised Bill 525, An Act Concerning Written Examination Exemptions from Engineer and Land Surveyor Licensing Requirements, will not be reported out of Committee. This bill would have granted exemption from examination for licensure, to anyone with twenty or more years of experience. CALS opposes any measure that will weaken the standards for licensure in the State of Connecticut. We thank both, Reese Roberts for providing testimony at the public hearing and President Andy Tupper for providing written testimony regarding this bill.
